The process of surface dressing has been used in UK roads and footways since the beginning of the 20th century and Henry Williams and Son (Roads) Ltd have been instrumental in its initial and subsequent development from that time.

Surface Dressing
Surface dressing is carried out for any or all of the following reasons:
Supply and Apply
i. To provide a waterproof seal to the surface of the carriageway or footway and in doing so prevent the ingress of water and the subsequent damage of the underlying construction.
Apply Only
Specialised
ii. To increase skid resistance to a carriageway or footway surface by increasing texture depth and micro-texture.
Tack Coating

iii. To provide a decorative finish with the application of 6mm or 10mm coloured chippings to high profile locations, e.g. driveways, high amenity areas, environmental improvement schemes.

Henry Williams & Son (Roads) Limited currently operate a fleet of 20 or more HGV bitumen sprayers as well as HGV chippers and other associated specialised plant. The company carries out surface dressing works for a large number and wide range of customers including County Council Highways Departments, Direct Labour Organisations, Bitumen Suppliers, Construction Contractors, Surfacing Contractors, Landscape Contractor, other Government Organisations (National Trust, Ground Work Trusts, NHS Trusts), and various large estate owners.
Dependant on the nature of the contracts, Henry Williams and Son (Roads) Limited have carried out surface dressing contracts in as diverse a market as Lincolnshire to Dorset, Pembrokeshire to Yorkshire, Isle of Lewis to Surrey.
